From Couch Potato to Canine Athlete: How to Keep Your Dog Active and Fit

Physical activity is so important in our daily lives, so it’s no surprise that our pups require the same. From simple methods to intense regimens, there are many ways to keep your dog active and moving. Here at Hillrose Pet Resort, we’d like to offer you a few ways to help keep your dog in great shape and keep them playing.

Walks

The most common form of exercising your dog is as simple as a walk. Chances are that you’ve walked your dog before, which means you’re already on the right path to keeping your dog in good physical condition. A walk with your dog can range in duration, distance, and intensity. You should consider your own ability and your dog’s needs when choosing what type of walk to go on. Certain dogs require more exercise, so you should consider a longer route. Some dogs regain energy faster than others, meaning two or more daily walks would suit them.

Swimming

As with walking, most dogs LOVE swimming. There are many ways to get your dog to swim. The easiest method would be to find a dog park with access to a body of water. You can also find swimming pools that allow dogs or even ones specifically dedicated to our pups! Hillrose would like to remind you that every dog has a limit, and water can be dangerous to certain dogs who might not be the best swimmers. Your dog may also be scared of getting in the water, so know your dog’s needs before putting them in a situation they may dislike.

Playtime

Dogs love to play, and it’s a great way to keep your dog moving while having fun. There are many ways to play with your dog that will help give them a good amount of exercise. One popular way to get your dog moving is through a game of fetch. Most dogs instinctively know how to fetch a ball, so getting them to participate should be simple. For a bit more movement, you can swap the ball for a frisbee, which will get your dog jumping. Dogs who can’t run can benefit from an obstacle course or even just a simple round of tug-o-war.

Food Toys

This might be the perfect method for dogs that require more encouragement for physical activity. Some toys allow you to insert food or treats inside, which your dog must work with to retrieve the food. You can find these at your local pet store or online. You should consider your dog’s size and abilities when purchasing one, as they come in different sizes and resistances.

Dog Yoga and Dog Dancing

Dog yoga and dancing might be challenging, but getting your dog to participate is a fun and exciting activity. Both require a bit of creativity and training, but getting your dog to mimic yoga or dance moves can be a good form of exercise. There’s no right way to perform these exercises, so do what feels best for you and your pup, and most importantly, have fun!

Exercising is essential to ensure that your dog stays happy and healthy throughout their life. A dog who stays active can live longer and play further into their lives. However, here at Hillrose Pet Resort, we know that you can’t always be there to make sure your pet is staying active. When your dog boards with us, we’ll make sure to keep them playing and active for you!
